New Principal of the Northern Virginia Juvenile Detention Center

Interim Superintendent Lois F Berlin has appointed Dr. Victor Martin as the Principal of the Northern Virginia Juvenile Detention Center School for Alexandria City Public Schools(ACPS).

Dr. Martin previously served as the Director of Alternative Programs and Equity at ACPS, where he provided leadership in working to eliminate the disparities in student achievement. In this capacity, Dr. Martin oversaw the ACPS Alternative Programs of T. C. Williams High School Satellite Program, Chance for Change Academy, Northern Virginia Juvenile Detention Center School and Sheltercare Educational Program. For the 2016-17 school year, Dr. Martin served as the acting administrator at Chance for Change.

“Dr. Martin brings extensive experience in working with alternative school programs and is happy to be back in a position where he will engage directly with students,” said Dr. Berlin.

After launching his education career as a classroom assistant, Dr. Martin went on to teach students in kindergarten through sixth-grade in California. He taught elementary and middle school students in Prince William County Public Schools before becoming an administrator and the lead in the Office of Multicultural Education. Dr. Martin has international teaching experience and has also collaborated with the U.S. Department of Education. He joined ACPS in 2012.

“Throughout my career with ACPS, I have worked to ensure an equitable, safe and effective learning environment for our students, with a special focus on alternative programs. I look forward to the opportunities this position brings,” said Dr. Martin.

Dr. Martin earned a bachelor’s degree from Oswego State University where he majored in English and a master’s degree from George Mason Universityin education leadership. He was a fellow in the National Institute for Urban School Leaders at Harvard University and recently graduated with his doctorate in education leadership from the University of Pennsylvania.

He has conducted workshops at a wide range of conferences, including the Association for Supervision and Curriculum Development, National Association of Black School Educators, National Staff Development Council, Virginia Staff Development Council, George Mason University: Make the Message Matter Conference, Virginia ESL Conference, National Association for Multicultural Education, Virginia School Nurses Association, and most recently, at the Minority Student Achievement Network Conference. He was also a contributing author to Strategies in Action, Volume 1: A Collection of Classroom Applications.

Martin starts in his new role on August 21.
