Can You Volunteer to Visit People in Hospital for The Holiday Project?

holiday-projectThe Holiday Project of the National Capital Area is sponsoring visits by volunteers to residents of hospitals, nursing homes, and long term care facilities throughout the holiday season.  According to Robin Wiley, President of The Holiday Project of the National Capital Area, “These visits bring the spirit of a holiday to people who otherwise would not have a celebration.”

The Holiday Project is a national nonprofit organization comprised of thousands of volunteers who visit with people spending Thanksgiving, Christmas, Chanukah and other holidays confined to hospitals, nursing homes and long-term care facilities.  Each year 1.5 million Americans spend their holidays confined to nursing homes; over two-thirds have no living relatives.

For these Americans, the holidays can be a lonely experience with few opportunities for companionship.   At the same time, many other people look for ways to make their holidays more fulfilling — ways to return themselves to the true spirit of the season. The Holiday Project provides an opportunity that satisfies both these needs.

Holiday Project volunteers give a very special gift and receive an even more special gift in return.  As one Holiday Project volunteer states, “Now I have only to touch my experience of The Holiday Project to have the holiday season be the way I always wanted it to be.”

Since its inception in the 1970’s, Holiday Project volunteers have visited with over a million and a half people confined in institutions all over the country on holidays throughout the year.  For more information, go to or call (703) 370-0370.
