Seafood leader Chicken of the Sea ranks the DMV
among the Top U.S. markets for actual and untapped salmon consumption

Hold the chili bowl and Jumbo Slice. An analysis by one of the world’s largest seafood providers suggests that Washington D.C. locals may actually prefer salmon.

salmon-jumpingThe internal analysis, conducted by Chicken of the Sea, ranked Washington D.C. among the Top 10 Salmon Cities in the United States. This means that local Washington D.S. residents eat more fresh and shelf-stable salmon per person than their counterparts in other U.S. cities, have the potential to eat more salmon or are more likely to try new salmon products, prepare salmon recipes or order salmon as a meal.

“Despite its reputation for beef, Washington D.C. is among the most sophisticated seafood markets in the country and home to an increasing number of seafood and salmon lovers,” said Maureen McDonnell, Chicken of the Sea’s director of brand marketing and category management. “We’d like to think that traditional protein lovers in Washington D.C. are more likely to occasionally trade their beef for a hearty salmon recipe. From a seafood and salmon standpoint, Washington D.C. is a trendsetter.”

Beyond Washington D.C., the other Top 10 Salmon Cities include Anchorage, Alaska; Baltimore; New York City; Cincinnati, Columbus, Ohio; Nashville, Tenn.; San Diego; Seattle; and Chicago.

The designation of the Top 10 Salmon Cities is part of Chicken of the Sea’s ongoing mission to increase the public’s consumption of seafood following the January 2016 release of Dietary Guidelines for Americans 2015-2020, which concluded that average seafood consumption is below recommendations for all U.S. age-sex groups. The report suggested dramatic changes for Americans to choose seafood in place of other protein foods for two meals (or 8 ounces) per week. To reignite the country’s fascination and consumption of salmon, Chicken of the Sea inaugurated National Salmon Day on October 8, 2015.

Chicken of the Sea became the first to introduce skinless and boneless salmon in 1984, and has been a strong supporter of the nutrition, convenience, versatility and recipe-development benefits of pouched salmon ever since. In 2014, the company notched another first when it introduced the industry’s first line of flavored salmon pouches as a high-protein alternative to traditional salads, sandwiches and rice bowls.
The company provides a multitude of salmon recipes, serving and meal-planning suggestions on its website, www.chickenofthesea.com, and through its Facebook, Twitter, Pinterest and Instagram pages.
