Mount Vernon and Woodlawn Offer Modern Events at Historical Places

Alexandria, VA – One of the joys of living in Mount Vernon is being a neighbor to so many historical places. And not just for the living history lessons. Landmarks in our community often offer events that mix the present with the past in unique ways. In June alone, Mount Vernon sponsored a Summerfest transforming its grounds into a Beer Tasting — beer was a favorite drink of George Washington — with live music. Woodlawn Plantation held two special events: a 156th Birthday party for Frank Lloyd Wright, the famous architect whose Pope-Leighey House is on its grounds, and a performance of Network by the Picnic Theatre Company. The proceeds went straight back into Woodlawn Plantation.

Wright utilized every inch of space in the tiny house with many features built in.
Wright’s birthday party featured games and puzzles for young visitors on the house’s patio.
The Network cast members have day jobs in the media and government but regularly perform all over the area.
The Fly Birds performed at Summerfest.
