New Acting Chief of Police
A familiar face around town since he joined the Alexandria Police Department in 1991, David Huchler is now Acting Chief of Police, succeeding Chief Earl Cook, who has retired.
“Chief Huchler’s 25-year tenure and diversity of experience in local law enforcement make him the right choice to lead the Police Department at this juncture,” said Jinks. “I am confident the Police Department is in good hands as we continue the selection process for a permanent chief.”
Huchler achieved the rank of Lieutenant in 2003 and Captain in 2005, before being promoted to Deputy Chief in 2012. Most recently, he oversaw the Investigations Bureau and was responsible for criminal investigations, crime scene investigations, vice and narcotics, public information, internal investigations and the volunteer unit. He has also commanded the Patrol Operations Bureau, served in the Office of Intelligence and Homeland Security, and was a Special Operations Team member and commander.
Huchler holds a bachelor’s degree in law enforcement and a master’s degree in public administration from George Mason University, where he also serves as an adjunct instructor. He is a graduate of the FBI National Academy and the Police Executive Research Forum’s Senior Management Institute for Police
