Alexandria, Va. — The Scholarship Fund of Alexandria (SFA) has received the largest gift in its 30-year history from Alexandria-based Henry Knox Field Lodge No. 349, a local Masonic Lodge.  Henry Knox Field Lodge has generously donated $600,000 to support college scholarships for local Alexandria students in need.  The gift is expected to help send 40 local children to college over the next two decades. Each year, this gift will support two $15,000 scholarships for two students from T.C. Williams High School.

Henry Knox Field Lodge awarded the gift during a dinner, attended by Interim Superintendent Dr. Lois F. Berlin, Alexandria Mayor Allison Silberberg, members of the Alexandria City School Board and City Council, at the Scottish Rite Temple in Alexandria.

“Today we are offering our financial support to the Scholarship Fund of Alexandria to invest in our local community and in Alexandria’s future. Our gift is intended to help local Alexandria kids who have the grades, grit and determination, but not the financial means, to attend college.  The Scholarship Fund has a proven track record over the past 30 years of helping to change the lives of Alexandria’s neediest students for the better.  We are proud to be able to help local students achieve their college goals,” said Brian King, Worshipful Master.

Scholarship Fund Board Chair Kathy Conrad expressed her gratitude for the Lodge’s generosity.

“The college scholarships funded by Henry Knox Field Lodge tonight will literally change the lives of local students, forever. The Scholarship Fund is extraordinarily grateful for this gift. We have been working with the local community to help send students in need to college since 1986.  With Alexandria’s socioeconomically diverse population continuing to swell at T.C. Williams, the need for college scholarships has simply never been greater.  This gift comes just in time to help us try to meet that need,” Conrad said.

Henry Knox Field Lodge has been sponsoring an SFA scholarship since 1992, the Henry Knox Field Scholarship. Emily Shuey, who attended the ceremony, was a 2003 recipient. It was named after a prominent businessman and Grand Master of Masons in the Commonwealth of Virginia in 1917 and chartered in 1925 in the Town of Potomac – now Del Ray. From 1947 to 1987, the lodge met at the DelRay Post Office Building at 1908 Mt. Vernon Ave.

The Scholarship Fund of Alexandria is a nonprofit 501(c)(3) organization providing scholarships and college advising to Alexandria City Public School Students. Since 1986, SFA has awarded $13.5 million in scholarships, making college possible for more than 4,500 students.  College scholarships change lives, forever.
