The Third Annual Walk to Bust Cancer was held on Sunday, October 14th at Fort Hunt Park in Alexandria.  More than 750 people registered to participate in the Walk and over $80,000 was raised to benefit the National Breast Center Foundation.   The foundation exists to improve the lives of women by removing barriers that prevent them from getting proper screening, diagnosis, education and treatment for breast cancer.

“We all know someone – a family member, neighbor, co-worker, or friend – who has been touched by breast cancer.  This is a global problem and we are committed to make a difference starting right here in our own community.  Through improving EDUCATION, ACCESS, and TECHNOLOGY, we are making a difference in the lives of many women and their families,” said Dr. David Weintritt, Founder of the National Breast Center and Foundation.

The Walk to Bust Cancer brought together breast cancer survivors and their families, those currently battling the disease, and friends and neighbors who united to show their support.  Mayor Allison Silberberg joined Dr. David Weintritt and Martha Carucci, Executive Director of the National Breast Center Foundation, at the Walk.  Nueva Vida Executive Director Astrid Jimenez spoke about their partnership with the Foundation and presented Dr. Weintritt with the 2018 Virginia Breast Cancer Foundation’s Sherry Kohlenberg Healthcare Service Award.

The Walk featured an obstacle course for kids by PK Move, yoga by Ease Yoga and Cafe, dances by ArtSpire VA, the West Potomac Dance Team, and more.  “We are so grateful to all the support we received from the community and for all the generous donations and sponsorships.  The money raised by the Walk goes toward helping women in need right her in our own area” said Walk to Bust Cancer organizer Martha Carucci.  The Walk is organized by a committee of volunteers, most of whom are breast cancer survivors, who want to give back and help others battling the disease.
