ALEXANDRIA, VA – Dedication makes someone legendary, and on Thursday, March 14, eight outstanding Alexandrians were inducted as the 2019 Living Legends of Alexandria. This year’s awards were presented to Ronal E. Butler, Brooke Sydnor Curran, James Henson, Jane King, Capt. Eugene “Red” McDaniel , Lawrence “Robbie” Robinson and Jason and Loren Yates for their sustained and consistent contributions to the community over a significant period of time.

The nonprofit Living Legends of Alexandria was founded in 2006 by local photographer Nina Tisara, who thought it was important to capture the images of great city residents and appreciate their accomplishments. As part of the project, Tisara and her son, Steven Halperson, take beautiful photographic portraits of the legends, which are given to them as gifts and displayed in the Lyceum.

“Today the project also inspires people of all ages to creative action in the community,” Tisara said.

Alexandria Mayor Justin Wilson congratulated the awardees and read an official city proclamation, and the packed house watched video presentations on their stories.
