ALEXANDRIA, VA – Alexandria resident, Colleen Paletta, has been appointed chairperson of the YMCA Alexandria Board of Managers for the 2019-2020 term. Paletta currently serves as the Chief Mission Officer at Goodwill of Greater Washington.
“Colleen’s expertise and nonprofit experience are perfect for leading and growing the Y’s local advisory board,” said Velma Tinner, YMCA of Metropolitan Washington district vice president and executive director of YMCA Alexandria. “The Y helps to solve youth, family and community issues that shape Alexandria’s future. We are a community support organization for Alexandria residents, yet many families do not know the breadth and scope of YMCA programs and services.”
Paletta is looking forward to increasing the awareness and involvement of local individuals and families in the Y. “The Y is focused on nurturing our youth, improving our health and well-being, and connecting with our neighbors,” she said. “Everyone is welcome. It’s an inviting, gathering space for people of all ages, abilities, backgrounds, cultures, and incomes. As a volunteer-led, charitable nonprofit organization, the Y offers financial assistance to those who cannot afford Y programs or membership.”
Last year, the YMCA Alexandria Caring for Community annual campaign provided nearly $140,000 to more than 280 individuals and families. Children gained an early learning foundation, academic enrichment in afterschool childcare and a variety of activities in summer day camp. More than 80 children learned the lifelong skills be to be safe in and around water.
“A 2018 building renovation makes the Y even more welcoming and friendly,” Paletta said. “I catch up on local happenings and see my neighbors in the lobby or while exercising. As a 14-year resident of Alexandria, I consider the Y to be an anchor in our community. Everyone can be involved – so join, play, volunteer, and donate today.”
YMCA Alexandria is located at 420 East Monroe Avenue. For more information, call 703-838-8085, visit ymcadc.org and click on locations, or stop in for a tour.
The YMCA is a worldwide charitable organization that serves more than 250,000 individuals in the D.C. area each year. The YMCA of Metropolitan Washington established the annual Thingamajig invention convention more than 20 years ago. Located in Washington, D.C., the Anthony Bowen YMCA was one of the earliest African-American organizations in the United States, founded in 1853.
