Alexandria, VA – Each Sunday, from this weekend through Labor Day, the Junior Docent program of Gadsby’s Tavern welcomes kids to lead tours. The program, now in its tenth year, requires participants to be in the fourth grade or higher.

It provides an opportunity to practice public speaking and to learn the history of one of the most historic buildings in Old Town. The experience aids students in growing self-confidence, historical knowledge, and more.

In the 18th and 19th centuries, Gadsby’s Tavern served as the center of social and political life in Alexandria. Residents – including George Washington – gathered inside its walls to enjoy the best food and drink around and discuss political strategy that influenced the direction of our country.

Gadsby’s continues a tradition originated hundreds of years ago by its founders, John Gadsby and John Wise, to open its doors to the community for special events.

Junior Docent tours take place on Sundays from 2–5 p.m. Regular admission is $5 for adults ($4 for AAA members) and $3 for kids ages five to 12. Ages four and under are free. Blue Star Families are free as well. Coupons, including the Key to the City museum pass, are accepted.
