ALEXANDRIA, VA – Rec centers across Alexandria are now allowing residents to sign up for August classes and activities. This is welcome news for those who want to be active. Alexandria’s Department of Recreation, Parks, and Cultural Activities (RPCA) will permit nonresidents to begin signing up Friday, July 24.

There are a variety of programs available for kids six months of age to adults. For toddlers and parents, there is soccer. For youth, there is basketball and cooking. For teens and adults, there is jazzersize. And for families, classes include water safety. Many more opportunities are listed HERE.

Summer camp registration is also open. Full Time Modified Summer Camp is running now through August 14. Half Day Summer Fun Camps take place August 3-14. Friday Fun Days start July 24, lasting for two weeks. Cost varies for each, and financial assistance is available. For complete information, click HERE.

RPCA is following federal and local health guidelines. This includes symptom screening, use of face masks, enhanced cleaning, and physical distancing protocols specified for every program. In addition, indoor activities will have limited capacity.

To register, click HERE or call 703-746-5414. Those interested in signing up in-person must do so by appointment.

Family Swim Lottery

In related news, the City of Alexandria announced that families can now apply for a ticket lottery that will allow members to use city pools. This is a change from the first-come, first-served ticket practice instituted when pools reopened.

Each Thursday and Friday, residents may request swim times for the following Monday through Sunday. Alexandria households may request a maximum of three time slots per week, with no more than one time slot per day. Each Saturday, requests will be processed through a lottery, and households will receive an email notifying whether they have been enrolled or added to a waitlist for each of their requested timeslots.

Each confirmed request reserves 45 minutes of pool time and accommodates four people per family unit at Old Town Pool (1609 Cameron St.), or eight people per family unit at Warwick Pool (3301 Landover St.). Swimmer admission fees are due upon arrival at the pool.

Lap swim tickets for Old Town Pool and Chinquapin Park Recreation Center & Aquatics Facility’s indoor pool (3210 King St.) continue to be reserved through the existing ticketing system. All pool tickets are released on Thursdays at 9 a.m. for the following week.

For complete details, click HERE or call 703-746-6909. Staff is glad to help reserve tickets.
