Living On Music Encore: A Conversation With Folk Music Legend Tom Rush
Want to spend an unforgettable time delving into the fascinating, influential life of a true music legend? Then Z-TV’s Living On Music is exactly where you want to be this Monday night at 7pm.
Joining three-time Emmy-winning host Steve Houk for a very special Encore Presentation of an earlier Living On Music conversation is Tom Rush, a six decades-long deeply revered and respected songwriter, performer and yes, major influencer, whose journey into the tradition and spectrum of what music has been, can be, and will become, has been utterly remarkable.
Rush’s impact on the American music scene has been profound: he helped shape the folk revival in the ’60s, plus the folk renaissance of the ’80s and ’90s, and his music has left its stamp on generations of artists. James Taylor told Rolling Stone, “Tom was not only one of my early heroes, but also one of my main influences,” and country music superstar Garth Brooks, who makes a brief video appearance on the show wishing Tom a happy birthday, has credited Rush with being one of his top five musical influences as well.
Rush has also long championed emerging artists, his recordings introduced the world to the work of revered songwriters like Taylor, Joni Mitchell and Jackson Browne, whose songs he included on several of his early records after meeting them and bonding musically, introducing them to his followers and helping kick off their careers.
“Here were these three fabulous songwriters, all starting their run, and all of a sudden just falling into my lap,” Rush, who turned 80 a couple months back and survived contracting COVID-19 last year, recalls. “I loved their songs, they were different, but not so different that they were alien. And I thought OK, come on, let’s do this.”
In more recent years, his Club 47 concerts at Boston’s Symphony Hall have brought artists such as Nanci Griffith, Shawn Colvin and other top artists to wider audiences when they were just beginning to build their own reputations.
