Wesley Housing Listed as a Top Affordable Housing Developer
ALEXANDRA, VA – Wesley Housing, a nonprofit affordable housing developer, was recently named one of the Top 50 Affordable Housing Developers of 2020 by the Affordable Housing Finance Magazine This magazine annually ranks on a national level both profit and non-profit developers based on the total number of new and affordable housing units constructed or began construction in 2020. Wesley Housing boasts the construction of 304 affordable housing units. Of the fifty developers named, Wesley Housing was only one of nine non-profit developers that was recognized.
The Wesley Housing nonprofit (WHDC) was established in 1974 by it’s first president, Virginia Peters, an elementary school teacher and mother. The lack of affordable quality housing in her area made Peters and her community take initiative. Since then, the organization has created numerous affordable apartments around the area. In 1988, Peters created the Wesley Property Management Company, Inc., and since its establishment, the nonprofit organization has continued to help provide affordable housing for the public. Even after Peter’s retirement, the organization stayed true to its goals of producing reasonably priced homes.
The WHDC describes their mission as being “..to build up the lives of our most vulnerable community members by creating and operating healthy, supportive, stable, affordable housing communities. We do this by addressing the racial inequities that have contributed to our residents’ circumstances and offering free support services and education to guide them on their paths to self-sufficiency.” Just last year, WHDC’s Housing Stability Initiative was named the “Best Program or Service” at the VA Governor’s Housing Conference last year, as well as being awarded the title of one of the “Top 50 Affordable Housing Developers of 2020.”
