Alexandria, VA – In two very special ceremonies, new signs for Alexandria City High School and Naomi L. Brooks Elementary School were revealed replacing the old monikers of segregationists.
“This day indeed is a day to remember,” said General Leo Brooks, when the new Naomi L. Brooks sign honoring his late wife replaced the old Maury Elementary lettering. “It is a day of emotions, a day of some sad and some joyful history, and the day that I pray will be the inspiration for many of you who are standing here…to grow up to be like her.”
Across town a few days later, Principal Peter Balas remarked upon the unveiling of the Alexandria City High School signage, “It really has been a year of using voices, advocating, and I am so glad that we are able to have them involved in this today.”
New Logos and Colors and Mascots
Naomi L Brooks Elementary will be The Bees with blue and green colors. Principal Suzanne Hess said the Bees mascot was selected to honor Brooks’ loves for plants and gardens.
Superintendent and T.C. Williams alum, Gregory Hutchings told the crowd, “Once a Titan, always a Titan,” and explained that the mascot would stay the same. Two students hoisted a cover off an easel to reveal the new Titan head and an intertwined A and C logo for Alexandria City. Each was designed by a student.
