ALEXANDRIA, VA – Friends of Guest House, in operation since 1974, assists former female inmates as they readjust to society. A few days ago, the nonprofit organization received a welcome surprise. Two members of the Rotary Club of Alexandria – Mary Lee Anderson and Christine Friedberg – delivered much-needed supplies to Friends of Guest House on behalf of the Club.

The supplies, estimated value $1,000, included food, laundry detergent, toiletries, and much more. The Zebra learned that the items selected were based on a wish list provided by Friends of Guest House.

“I am very proud to be a member of the Rotary Club of Alexandria,” said Anderson when reached for comment. Rotary’s motto is ‘Service Above Self,’ and our Club exemplifies how to make that a reality for the Alexandria community that we support.”

Anderson explained that each summer, their Community Services Committee creates a calendar of monthly service opportunities. It is based on requests from a variety of local organizations that participated in the Club’s grant program. Rather than focusing on a specific area, the committee  selects projects based on assisting different groups and populations. For example, this year the Club will also donate to ALIVE!, Carpenter’s Shelter, and Neighborhood Health, to name a few.

The Club has offered its members regular opportunities to serve the community since 2017. Members can take part in activities such as the December bell-ringing for the Salvation Army and delivering for Meals on Wheels. They can also donate resources to nonprofits like Friends of Guest House.
