OBITUARY: Noted Attorney, Michael John Campilongo, 77

ALEXANDRIA, VA – Michael J. Campilongo passed away on Friday, June 9, 2023. He was born in Bethesda, Maryland in 1946, the son of Ella Mae and Salvatore Campilongo.

After graduating from Ascension Academy in 1964, he achieved his Bachelor’s of Science degree in Foreign Service from the Edmund A. Walsh School of Foreign Service at Georgetown University, Washington, DC in 1968. He then attended Washington and Lee University in Lexington, Virginia graduating with a Juris Doctor degree in 1973. While obtaining his law degree, he co-chaired the Washington and Lee Democratic Mock Convention in 1972. He also earned a Master of Laws degree in Environmental Law from George Washington University, in Washington, DC in 1989.

He served as the Assistant Attorney General of Virginia from 1974 to 1976, and as Assistant General Counsel to the National Paint & Coatings Association, in Washington, DC from 1979 to 1987.   Michael was a former president of the Alexandria Bar Association from 1984-1985, Chair of the Virginia State Bar Environmental Law Section, and president of the Virginia State Bar Conference of Local Bar Associations from 1986 to 1987.  In 1986, he received awards, on behalf of the Alexandria Bar Association, for communications and public service from the Virginia State Bar.  He also served as Special Counsel to the City of Alexandria from 1988 to 1990.

He retired from the Small Business Administration in 2019, where he served as attorney advisor for over 20 years.

Michael supported various charities, and elections, both local and national.  He was an avid reader, and lover of lively political debates and discussions. He took his role as Godfather very seriously and loved his two Goddaughters, Elena Hurley and Sarah Stricevic (nee Twardy), very much.  He is survived by his sisters, Mary Campilongo and Maria Demarest, his aunt, Marie Campilongo, and cousins, David Campilongo, Stephen (Linda) Freitas, Donald Freitas, Jr., and Fred (Janis) Ruggiero.

A memorial Mass will be held at 10:30 am on Friday, July 21, 2023 at the Basilica of St. Mary, 310 South Royal Street Alexandria, VA 22314.  Internment will take place at the Queen of Heaven Columbarium at the Saint Mary’s Catholic Cemetery at a later date.
