What City Services Are Open and Closed in Alexandria on Christmas and New Year’s?

ALEXANDRIA, VA-All City of Alexandria government offices will be closed Monday, December 25, and most will be closed Tuesday, December 26, in observance of the Christmas holiday. All City Offices will be closed on Monday, January 1, 2024, in observance of the New Year’s holiday. The following list includes additional schedule information for City facilities and partner agencies.

Alexandria City Public Schools (ACPS):

Monday, December 18-Monday, January 1, 2024: All schools will be closed for winter break.

Alexandria Transit Company (DASH):

Monday, December 25: DASH bus service will operate on a Sunday schedule. The Alexandria Transit Company administrative offices will be closed.

Tuesday, December 26: Normal DASH bus service operation. Alexandria Transit Company administrative offices will be closed.

Monday, January 1, 2024: DASH bus service will operate on a Sunday schedule. Alexandria Transit Company administrative offices will be closed.

The free King Street Trolley operates from King Street Metro to City Hall/Market Square with service every 15 minutes, from 11 a.m. to 11 p.m. every day.

Animal Welfare League of Alexandria (AWLA):

Sunday, December 24: Open 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Adoptions begin at noon.

Monday, December 25: Closed

Sunday, December 31: Open 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Adoptions begin at noon.

Monday, January 1, 2024: Closed

Courts:

Friday, December 22: The following Commonwealth of Virginia courts in Alexandria will close at noon: Circuit Court, Clerk of Circuit Court, General District Court, Juvenile and Domestic Relations District Court, and Court Service Unit.

Monday-Tuesday, December 25-26: All courts will be closed.

Monday and Tuesday, January 1 and 2, 2004: All courts will be closed.

Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV):

Monday, December 25: Closed.

Monday, January 1, 2024: Closed.

Health Facilities:

Friday, December 22: Alexandria Health Department, Flora Krause Casey Health Center, and the Teen Wellness Center will be open 8 a.m.-12 p.m.

Monday, December 25: Alexandria Health Department, Flora Krause Casey Health Center, and the Teen Wellness Center at Alexandria City High School will be closed.

Monday, January 1, 2024: Alexandria Health Department, Flora Krause Casey Health Center, and the Teen Wellness Center at Alexandria City High School will be closed.

Emergency Hotlines:

All emergency hotlines operate 24 hours a day, 365 days a year, including the Child Protective Services Hotline at 703.746.5800; the Domestic Violence Hotline at 703.746.4911; the Emergency Mental Health Services or substance use crisis hotline at 703.746.3401; the Adult Protective Services hotline at 703.746.5778 or 988; and the Sexual Assault Hotline at 703.683.7273.

Historic Alexandria:

Sunday, December 24: Fort Ward Museum and Historic Site and The Alexandria History Museum at the Lyceum will be closed.

Monday, December 25: All City Museums will be closed.

Saturday, December 30: Friendship Firehouse Museum will be open 11 a.m.-5 p.m.

Monday, January 1, 2024: All City Museums will be closed.

Impound Lot:

Saturday-Tuesday, December 23-26: Closed.

Saturday-Monday, December 30-January 1, 2024: Closed.

The City’s impound lot is closed on all weekends and observed City holidays. Fees will continue to accrue on Saturday and Sunday, but not on holidays.

Libraries:

Sunday-Tuesday, December 24-26: All Libraries will be closed.

Monday, January 1, 2024: All Libraries will be closed.

Parking:

Monday-Tuesday, December 25-26: The Alexandria Police Department will suspend enforcement of parking restrictions at metered spaces and residential permit parking districts. This suspension of enforcement applies only to the restrictions at legal parking spaces and does not permit parking in any normally prohibited location. Temporary no-parking signs will be enforced.

Recreation, Nature, and Arts Centers:

Sunday and Monday, December 24 and 25: All Recreation, Nature and Art Centers will be closed.

Tuesday, December 26: Charles Houston Recreation Center, Patrick Henry Recreation Center, and Chinquapin Park Recreation Center and Aquatics Center will be open 9 a.m.-3 p.m. All other facilities will be closed.

Monday, January 1, 2024: All Recreation, Nature and Art Centers will be closed.

Resource Recovery:

Residential refuse, recycling, yard waste, and curbside food waste will be delayed by one day during the week of December 24. The Household Hazardous Waste & Electronics Recycling Center will be open on Saturday, December 23, and closed Monday, December 25.

Torpedo Factory Art Center:
