Mount Vernon Matters

New Brand and Mission for AHS

Alexandria, VA – The American Horticultural Society turned 100 last year with pomp and ceremony and this year it celebrated with a rebranding of its logo and its mission statement.

Just after the new year, AHS released a new logo which, according to AHS President and CEO Suzanne Laporte, “ shows that gardening itself has changed. Like every discipline in science, horticulture evolves. Horticulturists move forward and make progress. So too, does the 100-year-old American Horticultural Society!” The old logo has been in use for 25 years.

The AHS also refreshed its mission, vision, values, and DEI statement to emphasize its dedication to inspiring, connecting, and welcoming all to the gardening community. It named four pillars as its base: Beauty, Health, Community and Environmental Stewardship.

And, of particular interest to its Mount Vernon neighbors, the AHS reinstated its unwavering commitment to preserve River Farm as the historic headquarters of the AHS and a cornerstone of the community.
