The City of Alexandria Appoints New Race and Social Equity Officer
ALEXANDRIA, VA-Dr. Emerald Christopher is the city’s new Race and Social Equity Officer. In this position, she will lead the city government’s related programs. Part of Christopher’s job will also be to advance policies related to race and social equity concerns. She begins Feb. 28.
“I am delighted Dr. Christopher will be joining the City of Alexandria,” said City Manager James Parajon. “I look forward to seeing her collaborate with City departments, employees, community members, and other stakeholders to help the City continue its effort to become an even more equitable community.”
Christopher has almost two decades of experience working in higher education and U.S. policy related to equality. She was an associate professor of Women and Gender Studies at the University of Delaware. She has also served as Director of the Anti-Racism Initiative.
Prior to teaching, Christopher was a Congressional Fellow on Women and Public Policy. In the U.S House of Representatives, she assisted in the creation of the Women’s Economic Agenda.
She earned her doctorate in Language, Literacy, and Culture from UMBC She also has a master’s in Women’s Studies and Higher Education Administration from GWU, and a bachelor’s in Women’s Studies from the University of Delaware.
