Storck Flies High to Give District Growth Update
By Steve Hunt
Alexandria, VA – Following his Town Hall Meeting remarks, Mt. Vernon Supervisor Dan Storck presented his 30-minute virtual flyover of the Mount Vernon District, giving attendees a “snapshot” of all of the goings on in the district beginning with the completion of the $34 million Fairfax County Police Department Station and animal shelter in Lorton.
Along the way north, the video highlighted the adaptive reuse plan at Laurel Hill, economic development in the area, including a new Lidl grocery store and Ledo Pizza restaurant, the thriving Workhouse Arts Center complex, and the Potomac Banks initiative to increase tourism, the coming of a new Gunston fire station, and the completion of missing trail sections and $103 million in improvements to the Noman Cole water treatment plant.
Farther north, the video noted the reduction of the speed limit on Richmond Highway from 45 mph to 35 mph from Jeff Todd Way to the Beltway, the completion of the trail alongside Mount Vernon Memorial Highway, and parking improvements to Grist Mill Park.
Along Richmond Highway, the video noted that the new Woodlawn fire station is LEED Platinum certified and the Original Mount Vernon High School master planning process is underway. Regarding the illegal parking of commercial vehicles, residents were urged to contact the police.
In the past year, Inova Mount Vernon Hospital has added two new units to improve health outcomes, and a Fresh World grocery store is slated to open in the former Safeway on Richmond Highway in the Hybla Valley area. The North Hill development is now open as part of the county’s housing for all initiative.
At Beacon Hill, plans are underway for a new Penn Day fire station to be co-located with a supportive housing project. More residential development is slated for the Huntington/North Gateway area.
The major renovation of Mount Vernon RECenter is underway in the Belle View area. It is slated to reopen in 2025, and regarding traffic concerns along the George Washington Memorial Parkway, particularly at the intersections with Belle Haven Road and Belle View Boulevard, the National Park Service is seeking the right balance between traffic and safety.
