Rainbow Crosswalks in Alexandria Here to Stay
ALEXANDRIA, VA-June is Pride month. You may have noticed the rainbow-colored crosswalks in town. The are two – located at King and Royal streets. They both cross on King Street on either side of the intersection. To learn more, The Zebra reached out to Councilman R. Kirk McPike, who championed the proposal for their existence.
“Last June, in response to resident requests, I brought a memo before Council, which my colleagues supported, asking staff to put together a proposal for permanent Pride street artwork,” McPike said. “Staff brought a proposal to us last fall, which Council approved, leading to these beautiful new crosswalks.”
And McPike says they are permanent. Unseen Old Town group member Agnes Artimel posted a photo of one. It has been shared 14 times since May 31 to overwhelming positive comments.
The installation started last Thursday. The councilman recalled that even though it was dark when he visited the installation site, it was clear to him they would be a “wonderful addition” to the popular intersection.
I’ve heard from numerous residents who were excited to see Alexandria finally join the list of cities across the nation with this sort of permanent Pride artwork, including LGBTQ+ Alexandrians and parents of LGBTQ+ kids who appreciate this visible statement of inclusion and acceptance from their City,” he said.
