Alexandria Little League Team, State Championship Winner, Advances to Regional Tourney
Regional round is scheduled for July 19-22 in NC
ALEXANDRIA, VA-Alexandria’s Intermediate baseball team beat the Broadway Community Little League, 10-0, to win the Virginia State Championship. The game took place at Eugene Simpson Field on July 10. With that win, the Intermediates remain undefeated at 9-0 in the Little League All-Stars Tournament. They are advancing to the Southeast Region Tournament in Kernersville, NC, scheduled for July 19 to 22.
This is just the second time that a team from Alexandria has won the state championship.
“This team is resilient. We had to play from behind in our first three games, and the boys remained calm and played ‘stronger together,’ says Manager, Mike Coughlin. “Every player, coach, parent and so many other volunteers contributed to this team becoming the State Champion. We can’t wait to start the Regional Tournament!”
The state round welcomed eight district winners and saw the Intermediates play four games. To advance to the final, they beat Central Accomack Little League, Broadway Community Little League (their championship opponents), and Hampton York.
“It was an action-packed tournament, hosting talented teams from across the state at Simpson field. Having Alexandria take the title of Virginia State Champions made it even more memorable,” says Laura Engel, President of Alexandria Little League. “We couldn’t be more excited about what this signals about the growth of baseball in the City of Alexandria.”
The tournament was hosted by Alexandria Little League and District 4. They were aided by the League’s Board of Directors, ACHS Baseball, Parks and Rec staff, and volunteers.
Alexandria Little League is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit, organized under state law. Its purpose is to teach children good sportsmanship, honesty, loyalty, and respect for authority, which helps them grow into exemplary citizens. There are about 500 players in the league, in existence since 1998.
