ALEXANDRIA, VA-On Friday, July 26, the city is hosting a free pop-up archaeology exhibit related to the ships excavated at Robinson Landing in 2018. This free event, from 4:30 to 7 pm, is a rare opportunity for visitors to see scale models of the three vessels, which date to the 18th century.

A city archaeologist will guide visitors through the exhibt at the corner of The Strand and Pioneer Mill Way, on the same block where the ships were found, answering questions and explaining how the ships were used to create new land along the waterfront.

“We are excited to present the ‘Buried Ships of Robinson Landing’ exhibit to the community,” said Eleanor Breen, City Archaeologist. “This collaboration with the Robinson Landing Property Owners Association allows us to bring history to life in a tangible and accessible way, fostering a deeper understanding of our shared maritime heritage.”

Thanks to the partnership, archaeologists with the city were given a unique opportunity to share the importance of the site’s history.  The scale models on display were used, along with digital technology, to study ship construction, determine their age, as well as their use.
