Come for a Summer of Events at George Washington’s Mount Vernon!
Step back in time to estate life in the 18th century.
Alexandria, VA – George Washington’s Mount Vernon is trying out new events this summer with offerings designed to make history fun and informative. On select weekends, visitors can personally experience different aspects of life as it was in the 18th century in immersive, hands-on interactions with experts from the estate.
On August 10-11, “Foodways: Farm to Table” will present a discovery of 18th-century food growth, preparation, and dining during tours of the gardens, salt house, smokehouse, slave quarters, greenhouse, and mansion kitchen. At Mount Vernon’s icehouse, watch ice cream and butter-making demonstrations.
“Book Arts” is scheduled for August 24 and 25. Visitors can learn about colonial bookmaking with special guests from Colonial Williamsburg and President Washington’s personal secretary, Tobias Lear, reading Washington’s only published book, The Journal of Major George Washington.
The “Animals of Mount Vernon” will be featured on August 31 and September 1. Mount Vernon’s livestock experts will share the history of the animals’ jobs on the estate and introduce visitors to the sheep, oxen, and horses. At the Spinning House, guests will learn about transforming sheep’s wool into cloth and textile production.
