ALEXANDRIA, VA-Alexandria’s Anne Theresa Hood is a graduate of the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy in Kings Point, New York. She now holds a BS degree and is commissioned to serve in the armed forces. With her Merchant Marine officer license, Hood is qualified to serve on any ship in the U.S. flag merchant marine.

Hood was nominated for the academy by Sen. Tim Kaine and Congressman Don Beyer.

The academy is one of five U.S. federal service academies that educates and trains officers to serve during peacetime and war. During peacetime, they secure this country’s commerce. And in war, they deliver troops, weapons, and supplies.

The USMMA is the first of the branch academies to admit women. This year marks the 50th anniversary of women enrollment.
