ALEXANDRIA, VA-Alexandria City Hall was built in 1871. It is the workplace for more than 300 city employees. More than that, it is a city landmark. Market Square Plaza, where it is located, is a gathering space for residents and visitors, and has been since the city’s founding in 1749. In their current forms, both the plaza and building have served people for a number of years.

An Alexandria eNews bulletin released this afternoon (Sept. 4) reports that City Hall and Market Square are in need of repairs. Market Square and its garage need structural fixes while City Hall requires updates to aging components.

To that end, a design team has been selected for the renovation process. City Manager James Parajon made the announcement that the firm LEO A DALY has been selected for the project. The design process is expected to occur through early 2026 with construction taking place beginning in 2026 and lasting through 2028.

This is an exciting first step in a long-awaited process,” Parajon said. “City Hall and Market Square should reflect this great city, our history, and the commitment to equitable services that our community expects. We look forward to reimagining how to ensure 301 King Street is a source of pride for our employees and residents.”

The project result, according to the bulletin, “will provide a revitalized safe and sustainable environment” for all. Examples of improvements to City Hall include making finding your way easier, security, and air circulation.

Community engagement meetings are planned. The city will also have booths at various farmers markets so that those interested can learn more. For details, click HERE.
