Day of the Dead Altar Debuts in Del Ray

Día de los Muertos honors the memories of loved ones - humans and pets - all are welcome to participate!

Alexandria, VA — Alexandria’s own Amy Eggers is creating a special Día de los Muertos (Day of the Dead) altar that will be displayed for the entire community to engage with and learn about this rich cultural tradition. This interactive altar installation, located outside of Magpie Reclamations at 202 E. Custis Avenue in Del Ray, will be open to the public on Friday, November 1, and Saturday, November 2, 6 – 9pm each night.

The Día de los Muertos altar honors the memories of loved ones while fostering a deeper understanding of this beautiful Mexican tradition. The altar will debut as part of the Magpie “Mystic Market” on Friday, November 1.

Community members are encouraged to contribute their own photos, notes, or small mementos to the altar to honor their loved ones – both people and pets. Educational displays will also be set up alongside the altar to explain the significance of each element and the history of the holiday, offering visitors an opportunity to learn more about the deep cultural significance of Día de los Muertos.

The Día de los Muertos altar, or ofrenda, is a centerpiece of the holiday, which is celebrated annually on November 1 and 2. The altar is adorned with symbolic items such as marigolds, candles, photos, sugar skulls, and offerings of food and drink. These items are meant to welcome the spirits of the deceased back for a brief visit with their families. This is the first year Eggers will be installing the altar and providing an inclusive space for the entire community to participate.

“This altar is an invitation for everyone, regardless of their background, to take part in a tradition that celebrates life, memory, and the connections we share with those who have passed on,” said Eggers. “It’s not just about mourning — it’s about celebrating the lives of our lost loved ones – both people and pets – and creating a bridge between us.”
