The discussions with film directors and writers like the one shown above in 2022, in the former Old Town movie theatre turned Patagonia store, that happen after most films shown in various theatres around the city, are part of why the Alexandria Film Festival is an important weekend for a film fan. ALEXANDRIA, VA — The Alexandria Film Festival (AFF) will screen nearly 60 films in person this weekend, November 8, 9, and 10, at the Northern Virginia Community College (NOVA) Alexandria Campus Auditorium,  The Alexandria History Museum at the Lyceum and Charles E. Beatley Library.

“There is more to the Alexandria Film Festival than watching new filmmakers show their stuff—opportunities to see the thought that goes into filmmaking, examine social messages, and see how filmmakers tell a story.

Patti North, the executive director, believes the more discussion that arises from the films, the better. “Discussions following the films are a part of the fun in the whole thing,” she said, especially when moviegoers have a chance to ask the filmmakers themselves. “We always have a huge variety,” North added.

Created by a diverse group of local and international artists, the films represent a variety of genres and tackle topics ranging from serious social issues like immigration and racism to crowd-pleasers like drama, romance, animation, comedy, and horror. More than 30 of the films are premieres, and over 30 filmmakers will be in attendance for Q&A panels following their films.

All films require tickets, except for the Salute to Service Members showcase/film block at Beatley Library on November 9, which is free to honor active and retired service members. All festival passes ($80) and showcase tickets ($15) are available online and at the door. Visit www.alexfilmfest.com for more information.
