ALEXANDRIA, VA-Alexandria City Council has approved a pilot program, to begin this winter, that will extend King Street’s pedestrian zone to the 200 block. That block goes to City Hall, between Fairfax and Lee streets.

The extension was proposed by Major Justin Wilson and Councilmember John Chapman. Before a unanimous vote to move forward with the pilot, the two discussed their idea with business owners and residents in that area.

Zebra Press coverage of the plan in September quotes the mayor: “I think we heard some good feedback, some support, some concerns, but no issues that I think are insurmountable.”

During the pilot program, the community is invited to express their thoughts. According to ALXNow, which first reported the development, closure will occur during two periods: Nov. 22 to Jan. 6 and March 14 to Sept. 30.

The unit block and 100 block of King Street became a pedestrian area in stages between 2020 and 2022.
