Alexandria Earns Perfect Score on Municipal Equality Index for Fifth Straight Year
Score increases in 2024, highlighting services for LGBTQ+ community
ALEXANDRIA, VA-For the fifth straight year, Alexandria has earned a perfect score on the Human Rights Campaign’s Municipal Equality Index (MEI). In addition, the city’s score increased by six points. The MEI determines the inclusiveness of cities in regards to the LGBTQ+ community based on their laws, policies, and services.
Alexandria, according to an eNews bulletin, was recognized in three areas: the inclusive workplace, services for LGBTQ+ youth, and services for LGBTQ+ older adults.
The city’s LGBTQ+ Task Force provide workplace training for public safety recruits and direct service providers. There is also training for city employees throughout the year. During Pride Month, City Manager James Parajon reached out to employees with a message and Chief Race and Social Equity Officer Dr. Emerald Christopher hosted a lunchtime learning opportunity.
In partnership with Safe Space NOVA, the Department of Community and Human Services provides grant-funded services for LGBTQ+ youth, including a support group and a cirriculum to learn how to maintain healthy relationships.
For older adults who identify as LGBTQ+,, The Commission on Aging works with city agencies to provide training to businesses that provide help seniors.
