ALEXANDRIA, VA-Wesley Housing, the affordable housing developer, is expanding it reach to help people outside of the DC metro area. The nonprofit is merging with Virginia United Methodist Housing Development Corporation, a nonprofit owner of affordable housing for older adults throughout the state. The move was announced during Wesley Housing’s 50th anniversary celebration Nov. 21 at The Garden in Alexandria.

Virginia United has 1,919 affordable housing units across 34 properties, which will double Wesley Housing’s portfolio. This marks Wesley Housing’s first major expansion in its history.

“This merger presents a unique opportunity for strategic growth, allowing us to leverage [Virginia United’s] existing assets while serving thousands of hard-working adults and children who would otherwise struggle to afford to live in their chosen communities,” said Kamilah McAfee, President and CEO of Wesley Housing. “We look forward to further establishing relationships with local jurisdictional representatives, businesses, nonprofit service providers, and funders that will be critical to our successful growth across the Commonwealth.”

Their corporate team is planning to hire and manage consultants who will oversee real estate development, resident services, and more.

In addition to preserving Virginia United’s properties, Wesley Housing sees this merger as an opportunity for further expansion.
