ALEXANDRIA, VA-The Southeast Fairfax Development Corporation (SFDC) has unveiled Faces of 1, a public art exhibit featuring ten sculptures by acclaimed artist Michael Alfano. This dynamic installation marks a major milestone in SFDC’s mission to transform the Richmond Highway corridor into a vibrant destination through placemaking and strategic development.

The Faces of 1 sculptures, placed along Richmond Highway, celebrate the diverse, resilient stories of the Southeast Fairfax community. This exhibit is part of SFDC’s broader placemaking efforts to create visually engaging spaces that build community pride, attract visitors, and enhance the perception of the corridor. Recent projects include multiple large-scale murals, such as a striking new piece on the Bank of America building in Hybla Valley called ‘Wild Haven’ by acclaimed muralist Matt Lively, all of which contribute to beautifying the area and strengthening its identity.

“These initiatives are about more than art—they’re about creating a Richmond Highway that people want to explore, connect with, and take pride in,” said Evan Kaufman, SFDC Executive Director. “Through placemaking, we’re changing how people see this corridor and highlighting the unique diversity of community and cultures that the Corridor has to offer.”

Richmond Highway is undergoing a significant transformation with over $1 billion of public and private investment. New developments like South Alex, Alexandra Crossing, and Mt. Vernon Gateway are reshaping the corridor with a mix of residential, retail, and entertainment spaces. The upcoming Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) system, part of the Embark Richmond Highway initiative, will further enhance accessibility and connectivity, tying together these developments with walkable streetscapes, bike infrastructure and public transportation between several planned community business centers.

Part of the area was recently rebranded ‘Potomac Banks’ and is home to historic landmarks such as the Mount Vernon Estate, Woodlawn Plantation, a Frank Lloyd Wright house, and the National Army Museum. Now, with the addition of Faces of 1, the corridor offers visitors an even richer experience, blending history, culture, and modern amenities into one destination.

SFDC invites residents and visitors alike to explore the new art pieces and discover the evolving Richmond Highway corridor. To learn more about the exhibit and plan your experience, visit sfdc.org/facesof1.
