Santa Skis on Alexandria’s Waterfront Once More Christmas Eve
ALEXANDRIA, VA-Before delivering toys to all the good little girls and boys, Santa is scheduled to make an appearance on Alexandria’s waterfront. On Christmas Eve, he will put on waterskis to glide across the Potomac.
Santa is bringing Mrs. Claus and a few pals with him. And there is even a rumor that the Grinch may try to take his skis, so keep a watchful eye. Launch is set for 1 p.m. at BARCA Pier and Wine Bar (2 Pioneer Mill Way).
The tradition began in 1986. Some friends were gathered discussing ideas for a holiday party. According to an article published by The Washington Post in 2016, a man known only as Santa Emeritus said: ““We decided it would be funny if one of us water-skied down the Potomac in a Santa suit, and I drew the short straw.”
With each passing year, the identity of Santa is never revealed. Not doing so is standard practice and part of the fun.
As The Zebra previously reported, ” you can bet it is one of a group of professional skiers who are passionate about the annual show, which includes about 50 or so boat drivers, skiers and other volunteers who make the event all come together. ”
For the best view, Waterfront Park (1 King St. and 1A Prince St.). Other great views are the Alexandria City Marina (0 Cameron St.), Founders Park (351 N. Union St.), and Point Lumley Park (1 Duke St.).
Be sure to check the Waterskiing Santa Facebook page for the latest updates. The high for tomorrow will be 45 degrees. At showtime, the forecast is cloudy and 39 degrees so dress warm.
