French Cafe Coming to Alexandria?

ALEXANDRIA, VA-The former location of Abbysinia Market & Coffee House, 720 Jefferson St., is changing ownership. The city received an application from the applicant, Nahom Debessay, on Dec. 20. He wants to rename the property Cafe du Soleil.

The application indicates it will operate as a coffee shop, selling not only coffee but also tea, salads, sandwiches, and other light fare. The application has a second request for the sale of beer and wine to enjoy inside or outside of the restaurant.

The proposed hours of operation are Monday to Sunday, 6 a.m. to 10 p.m.

The final day for public comment is Jan. 10, 2025.

Abbysinia Market announced its permanent closure in a June 27 Facebook post. Cafe du Soleil has one other location on 215 S. Union St. The location in DC has closed.
