ALEXANDRIA, VA-The popular Girl Scout Cookie sale began in early January and is winding down as it approaches its end later this month. However, today, Saturday, March 15, local troops were out in full force, showcasing their entrepreneurial spirit at booths outside popular cafes and shops. While some sales close as early as 2 p.m., at several locations, the booths will remain open until 5 p.m. You can find a location near you by searching with your zip code online at Girl Scout Cookie Finder 2025. You can also support Girl Scouts by ordering online.

At St. Elmo’s on Mt. Vernon Avenue, seventh graders Noemi, Marie, and Ruby from GW Middle School represented Troop 60085. Noemi shared how she has grown through scouting, stating, “Now I mentor others in gaining speaking skills,” despite being ” shy.” All three plan to stay in Scouts through high school. Marie said she joined “to be more active and make new friends.” Ruby added that she “loved the volunteer opportunities and sports.” All three chimed in that the many field trips made for very special experiences to share. There is an array of cookies from which to pick. But Ruby reminded customers that this is the last year to buy S’mores, Marie added a tidbit that microwaving the cookie briefly gives it a sitting-around-a-campfire taste.

Farther up the street at Del Ray Hardware, two students at George Mason Elementary School, an intrepid seven-year-old named Maisie and her eight-year-old friend, Anna-Raine, were busy selling Girl Scout Cookies for Brownie Troop 60331. Maisie was happy to volunteer that her favorite cookie is the Adventurefuls. Anna-Raine added that “yelling a lot” at passersby has proven to be a successful selling technique.

The week also marked National Girl Scout Day on March 12, which the Alexandria City Council celebrated with a reception for Alexandria’s Girl Scouts and a proclamation reading by Mayor Alyia Gaskins. Marie, Noemi, and Ruby attended the event. They are excited that the event will return to City Council’s calendar next year.

The History of the Grl Scouts

Girl Scouts of the USA was founded by Savannah-born Juliette Gordon Low in 1912. Her childhood home in Savannah is now the mecca for learning about the history of this iconic organization and its remarkable founder. Marie, Ruby, Noemi, and the rest of their troop have all visited Low’s childhood home and proudly displayed the badge they received for the visit, among many others for arts and crafts, community service projects, and outdoor and life skills.

They were well aware that she had faced serious health challenges and an unhappy marriage, and yet that did not impede her from creating an organization that empowers girls with leadership skills, promotes a commitment to excellence, and highly values integrity.

The traditional uniforms that once defined Girl Scouts and Brownies are a thing of the past. The Bownies now wear sashes, and the Girl Scouts sport more modern and stylish vests. This change is embraced by the girls. Yet amidst the changes, the core values of Girl Scouts remain. The friendships formed, the confidence built, and the community service projects have been the hallmark of the Girl Scouts since Juliette Godon Low opened up the carriage house of her late husband’s family mansion in Savannah to its first Girl Scout meeting.
