ALEXANDRIA, VA-The Department of Recreation, Parks, and Cultural Activities has a new director. Hashim T. Taylor began his duties as the leader of RPCA today (April 14).

As a native of Alexandria, he grew up participating in RPCA’s programs that a eNews bulletin said ” helped spark his passion for public service and community engagement.” The announcement described the job as a “full circle” opportunity.

Taylor is an experienced parks and recreation professional. He has supervised large-scale projects and the expansion of community programming. Most recently, he was Director of Parks and Recreation for the City of Cedar Rapids, Iowa, where he oversaw operations for more than 5,000 acres of parkland, 100 miles of trails, three golf courses, six swimming pools, and several recreation and cultural facilities.

He played a key role in securing funding for an initiative that aided in the recovery of Ceder Rapids following the derecho storm in 2020.

Before working in Cadar Rapids, he held the same position in Prince William County.

“Returning home to Alexandria is especially meaningful to Taylor, and he’s excited to lead the RPCA team in creating more opportunities for residents to connect with their parks, recreation spaces, and cultural programs,” reads a press release. “His focus will be on expanding community programming, improving public spaces, and ensuring that everyone in Alexandria has access to high-quality recreational experiences.”

Taylor earned his Master of Business Administration from Regent University and currently serves on the Board of Directors for the National Recreation and Park Association.
