ALEXANDRIA, VA – If you have a car and/or a will to help those in need, volunteers are needed in Alexandria to assist with Bagel Rescue.

Volunteer Alexandria recently put out the word that it is “thrilled to partner with Bagel Rescue.” Bagel Rescue is a nonprofit on a mission to reduce food waste and fight hunger by rescuing surplus bagels from local shops and delivering them to organizations feeding our community.

Bagel Rescue founder Erin Stieglitz started her 501c3 nonprofit during Covid in 2020 in the Atlanta Metro area. She had a nagging feeling about the food waste she saw and decided to do something about it.  She and a friend, Amy Wilensky, then set out on a mission to see if excess bagels could be rescued and put to good use.

Bagel shops started donating their “end-of-the-day” leftover bagels, and more and more shops joined as more hunger relief programs signed up to receive weekly distributions. Soon Bagel Rescue had a small yet manageable schedule of rescues and deliveries.

While bagels won’t sustain a full diet, they are an easily transportable, fresh food that offer nutrition, deliciousness, and dignity to those in need.
We believe food should not be wasted when it can be put to good use feeding our community. Join Bagel Rescue on our mission to break the cycle of waste and pain and create a cycle of hope and kindness. –Bagel Rescue

The effort has expanded well beyond Atlanta, and now Alexandria is looking for volunteers to pick up rescued bagels and deliver them to local nonprofits in Alexandria that serve food to those in need.

Pick-ups and drop-offs take place within Alexandria. Great opportunity for individuals, friends, or families! Make a difference with just a few miles and a little time. Sign up today and help turn extra bagels into full hearts!
