Revolutionary War History Comes Alive at George Washington’s Mount Vernon May 4
Witness a reenactment of Washington leaving home to lead the Continental Army. The scene will mark the 250th anniversary of the actual event

ALEXANDRIA, VA-Red azaleas and redcoats will be all over the grounds of George Washington’s Mount Vernon this weekend as the gardens and grounds of the mansion celebrate a special anniversary.
May 4 marks the 250th anniversary of Washington’s departure to Philadelphia to become the leader of the Continental Army. A once-in-a-lifetime reeactment is planned.
According to Mount Vernon’s website, “During the reenactment, George Washington will march down the Patriots Path and out of Mount Vernon’s front gates, marking the start of his journey to Philadelphia. Washington will be accompanied by 18th-century musicians and a cadre of historic reenactors dressed in period costumes.”
Additional events this coming weekend, including a ribbon-cutting ceremony of the newly installed “Patriots Path” Revolutionary War encampment on Sunday at 1:30 p.m. Patriots Path is described as a “one-of-kind outdoor” Revolutionary War scene.
It all occurs on the highly popular Revolutionary War Weekend during which Mount Vernon’s serene 12-acre field transforms into a battleground. Continentals, Redcoats, and Hessians will conduct military drills and 18th-century tactics. Attendees can step back in time and immerse themselves amidst the soldiers, military officers, and camp followers.
