ALEXANDRIA, VA – Deborah Warren, who is today marrying retired U.S. Congressman and former Alexandria Mayor Jim Moran, asks, “If not now, when?”
The two have known each other since 1985. Yes, that’s 40 years. Back then, Warren had just been hired by the City of Alexandria to provide mental health services and Moran was serving as Alexandria’s Mayor. The two soon learned they had both grown up in New England towns near one another, and attended the same Catholic high school. But that was all at the time.
Over the next few decades they ran into each other at various events, but in the fall of 2010, Warren received a phone call from a 202 number, “which turned out to be Jim,” she says. The two had dinner and have been together ever since.
“It slowly occurred to me that there was a hidden message here,” Moran told The Zebra in 2019. “She’s much smarter than I am.”
It was on New Year’s Eve that Moran dropped on one knee at the National Gallery of Art and popped the question to Warren.

“We were really meant to connect at some point in our lives, and we’re lucky it was later,” Warren said. “Love in later years can happen to you, and life is short and it’s important to be with people you love.”
Today is the wedding day, which happens also to be Moran’s 80th birthday. The couple has invited 225 of their closest friends and family for an intimate, celebration of their nuptials at their beautiful home in McLean, Virginia.
Shades of blue adorn every surface, including the front door. The stunning flowers are by long-time friend and Alexandria floral designer, Royce, the fabulous food is being handled by Mindy’s Catering, and the time is 5 p.m.
“Mother Nature has been a bit finicky this week and we may be celebrating under somewhat damp conditions,” Warren told her guests in an online update, so “feel free to bring (or wear) sandals or flip flops” for the exchange of vows on the lawn. The rest of the evening will be glamorous and dry under a very large tent.
