Alexandria Gets $80,000 to Determine if a Pedestrian/Cycling Trail is Feasible on N. Beauregard Street in the West End

ALEXANDRIA, VA – The City of Alexandria has received funding for a feasibility study to develop conceptual designs and cost estimates for a new trail along North Beauregard Street, a key corridor in the West End. The dollars are coming from the Metropolitan Washington’s Council of Governments’ (COG) Transportation Planning Board, which released grant winners for nine projects in the DMV.
This effort supports the community vision outlined in the Alexandria West Small Area Plan and aligns with the goals of the Alexandria Mobility Plan to enhance safety, connectivity, and multimodal access.
Project Overview:
The proposed improvements aim to transform North Beauregard Street into a safer, more accessible route for people walking, biking, and using transit. Planned conceptual design elements may include:
-
A new off-road shared-use path for pedestrians and cyclists
-
Installation of new crosswalks and upgrades to existing crosswalks for improved safety
-
Median islands to provide safer pedestrian refuge
-
Concrete improvements along sidewalks and curbs
-
Enhanced signage and traffic signals to support all modes of travel
-
Landscaping and streetscape improvements to create a more pleasant and inviting environment
These upgrades will significantly improve comfort and connectivity for all users—particularly those accessing schools, transit stops, businesses, and residential areas along the corridor.
Strategic Plan Alignment:
This initiative supports several key goals of the Alexandria Mobility Plan (AMP), including:
-
Creating a safe, comfortable, and connected walking and biking environment
-
Making it easier to use public transit
-
Supporting the City’s long-term vision for inclusive, sustainable transportation infrastructure
