$80K in Regional Funding Approved for Braddock Road Safety Improvements Near Alexandria City High School

ALEXANDRIA, VA — At its May meeting on Monday, May 21, the Regional Roadway Safety Program (RRSP) of the National Capital Region Transportation Planning Board (TPB) approved $80,000 in funding for a critical pedestrian safety initiative along Braddock Road in Alexandria.
The Braddock Road Safety Improvements project targets the section between Quaker Lane and North Van Dorn Street—an increasingly busy corridor due to heightened pedestrian traffic between the modernized Minnie Howard Campus and the main campus of Alexandria City High School.
The need for improvements has been underscored by community feedback and a 2023 Safe Routes to School Walk Audit, which identified multiple safety hazards. These included drivers failing to stop for pedestrians at key crossings and vehicles speeding through turns—conditions that have created dangerous situations for students commuting on foot between campuses.
In response, the City of Alexandria will use the RRSP funding to develop conceptual design alternatives focused on enhancing safety and accessibility. The project includes an analysis of current traffic patterns and road conditions, alongside a strong community outreach component to gather input from residents, parents, students, and school staff.

The effort is part of Alexandria’s Complete Streets Five-Year Work Plan and aligns with its Vision Zero goals—an initiative aimed at eliminating all traffic-related deaths and serious injuries.
Design concepts are expected to include traffic calming measures, improved pedestrian crossings, and other infrastructure enhancements. Opportunities for public engagement will be announced in the coming months as planning begins in earnest.
