Rolling Through the Years: North Ridge’s Wheel Day Celebrates 75+ Years of Community Spirit
A cherished tradition since the 1940s, uniting residents of all ages in a celebration of community, imagination, and the sheer joy of being in motion.

On Sunday, May 25, the North Ridge neighborhood in Alexandria, Virginia, came alive with the vibrant sights and sounds of its annual Wheel Day parade. This cherished tradition, sponsored by the North Ridge Citizens’ Association (NRCA), has been a staple of the community since the 1940s, bringing together residents of all ages to celebrate unity, creativity, and the simple joy of movement.
The parade commenced on N. Overlook Drive, where a diverse array of wheeled participants—ranging from rollerblades and scooters to strollers and even a medical scooter—embarked on a two-block journey under a giant American flag marking the finish line. True to tradition, no awards were given for speed; instead, accolades celebrated spirit and creativity.
Long-time resident Jeanne Snapp, who has lived on N. Overlook Drive for 49 years, reflected on the event’s significance: “I love it. It gives the community a real sense of community.” Snapp, a former NRCA president, assisted current Wheel Day co-chairs Angie Mistretta and Sarah Holley in distributing ribbons for categories such as Most Patriotic, Most Creative, Funniest, Best Group, Cutest, Most Colorful, and Most Spirited. A special award for Most Ambulatory was presented to Nathan Toews, who, despite a recent foot injury, participated alongside his 4-year-old son, Peter.
Ensuring the event remained a parade and not a race, neighborhood Master of Ceremony Tom Tyler led participants in reciting Rule #1: “Do not pass the ribbon” tied to the back of the Alexandria Fire Department fire truck pacing the group. This lighthearted rule set the tone for a joyful and inclusive procession.

Teenager Jude Tyler, 13, watched from the sidelines with friends, reminiscing about his own participation: “I won most patriotic. I did it for three years. One year I even dressed as Captain America.”
Wheel Day’s enduring popularity underscores the strong community bonds in North Ridge. As the neighborhood continues to evolve, this annual event remains a testament to the power of tradition and togetherness.
