ALEXANDRIA, VA – The Animal Welfare League of Alexandria (AWLA) Alexandria Animal Academy dog training classes start July 6.

This seven-week virtual course offers individualized training plans for adult dogs and puppies, with three learning tracks focused on improving on-leash behavior, confidence, overall manners, and impulse control. Dog moms and dads can choose one, two, or all three educational tracks.  (If you’re not sure which course(s) are the best fit, email the AWLA at [email protected]).

These virtual training sessions ensure everyone stays cool during these soaring temperatures and includes group instruction, individual feedback, and training plans. Bonus: You get feedback from a professional, certified dog trainer and meet other like-minded dog parents!

The learning tracks include:

  • Confidence Building: This track is for shy, fearful, and/or nervous dogs who might act in aggressive ways (growling, snapping, barking) when faced with new people, places, or things. If your pup cowers, hides, or panics around visitors or in public, or snaps “out of nowhere,” the Confidence Building track might be the right fit for you. This is also a great course for dogs who are new to you and your home.
  • Chill Out: This track is for dogs who are always on the go or who lack manners and impulse control. If your dog has a hard time calming down at the end of the day, gets over excited about everything, or you just need a break from their energy level, “Chill Out” might work for your dog.
  • Leash Reactivity: This track is for pups who have big feelings on walks. If your dog snarls and snaps when they see a stranger or dog or pulls your arm off to get closer to them, “Leash Reactivity” might be just what your dog needs.

The courses are taught by our on-staff behavior and training coordinator Beth Tumlin, CPDT-KA (Certified Professional Dog Trainer-Knowledge Assessed). Tracks begin at $200 with reduced fees for multiple tracks.
