Alexandria Health Department Provides Updates on COVID-19 Vaccine Administration

ALEXANDRIA, VA-The Alexandria Health Department (AHD) is working hard to vaccinate residents from COVID-19. Currently in Phase 1b, they are doing so with a limited supply of doses. AHD projects that for the next three to four weeks, they will receive 2,000 doses per week. Considering that complete inoculation takes two doses, they have had to prioritize within the phase itself.

The health department emphasized in a citywide email that even though “the exact timing is unclear, everyone who wants to [be] vaccinated will receive the vaccine.”

AHD has so far received 20,000 pre-registrations for people who are 1b eligible, based on age or medical condition. This number does not count the thousands of pre-registrations from essential workers.

To prioritize most effectively, the department is following the Commonwealth of Virginia’s Phase 1b guidance.

People aged 75 years or older will be contacted first when vaccine appointments are available because that group is most likely to develop severe illness or die from COVID-19. Then people 65 or older will be contacted, followed by those with medical conditions.

Every Friday, AHD will release updates on on the number of vaccines received, vaccines administered via AHD vaccination events, appointments scheduled, and vaccines redistributed to community providers.

Note that there is no need to register multiple times. If residents have registered, AHD will be in contact.
