Bike Safety Classes Offered in Alexandria and Springfield April 30 and May 1
ALEXANDRIA, VA-The Alexandria Bicycle and Pedestrian Committee (BPAC) is an all-volunteer nonprofit that promotes biking safety. On Friday, April 30 and Saturday, May 1, the group will host classes for riders to increase their knowledge of safety.
In the free Smart Cycling classes – open to anyone who lives or works in Northern Virginia – participants will learn specifically how to ride with safety and comfort in various traffic conditions, terrains, and climates. (See below listings for times and locations.)
“These classes are a great way to build bike skills, connect with other people who enjoy cycling, and learn how to get involved in improving the bike community,” said Zachary DesJardins, BPAC Secretary.
There are two components to each class: online instruction and an on-bike portion. Designed for experienced riders, participants must bring their own helmets, bikes, and masks. COVID-19 precautions will be in place, including limiting each class to 12 students, wearing masks while riding (if breathing is not an issue), and maintaining proper social distance.
Upon completing the course, participants are required to take part in a volunteer activity that promotes safe biking and walking.
Funding is provided by a Northern Virginia Regional Commission/Virginia Highway Safety Office grant.
