ALEXANDRIA, VA-The Battle of Normandy, also known as D-Day, began on June 6, 1944. On that day, 150,000 American, British, and Canadian troops landed on five beaches along Normandy, France. The two-month battle resulted in the liberation of Nazi-occupied Western Europe, a turning point in World War II.
To commemorate that decisive day in history, Alexandria is hosting two virtual events. Both are free to attend.
On June 3, Dr. Kim Bernard Holien, a former U.S. Army Historian, will present a lecture titled “Secrets of D-Day.” Holien will discuss events – known and unknown – that helped lead Allied forces to victory. To register, click HERE.
On June 4, Linda Hervieux, a Paris-based American journalist, photographer, and author, will discuss her book “Forgotten: The Untold Story of D-Day’s Black Heroes, at Home and at War.” She will tell the story of D-Day’s Black soldiers, who were written out of history books. Former news anchorman Tom Brokaw called the book “utterly compelling.” Historian and author Douglas Brinkley remarked that “all Americans should read” this work.
