George Washington Masonic Memorial Opens Grounds to Community on Independence Day and Alexandria’s 275th Birthday
Free Parking in the Memorial's Ample Lot Behind Building
ALEXANDRIA, VA – The George Washington National Masonic Temple is opening its grounds and parking to the community this evening to celebrate Independence Day.
“We’re pleased to welcome those who wish to take in our spectacular view of Alexandria as part of their family celebration of our nation’s freedom,” said Shawn Eyer, the Memorial’s communications director. “It may be possible to see some area fireworks from our vantage point”
The grounds will be open again on Saturday, July 13, 2024 when the City of Alexandria throws its big birthday bash, including a spectacular fireworks show, celebrating 275 years since its founding.
The main event location at Oronoco Bay Park (10 Madison Street) will include music, cupcakes, and activities, ending with the Grand Finale — a fireworks display at 9:30 p.m. Admission is free!
Scheduled activities at Oronoco Bay Park include the following:
- 6 p.m. – Performance by Munit Mesfin
- 7:30 p.m. – Welcome by Event Emcee
- Announcement by Town Crier
- Remarks by Mayor Justin Wilson
- Poetry by Alexandria Poet Laureate Zeina Azzam
- 8 p.m. – Members of the City Council distribute of birthday cupcakes (sponsored by Wegman’s)
- 8:30 p.m. – Performance by the Alexandria Symphony Orchestra
- 9:30 p.m. – Grand finale fireworks display with Alexandria Symphony Orchestra and cannons by the U.S. Army Presidential Salute Battery
“It’s a perfect view of the Alexandria fireworks,” added Eyer.
The Memorial is located at 101 Callahan Drive in Alexandria and has an ample parking lot behind the building (parking is not permitted along the driveway and in front of the building). Visitors are asked to comply with all posted signs and staff directions.
