Help Save the Del Ray School of Music: GoFundMe Page and Rock for Steve Concert Raising Funds to Keep School Open
Founder and owner Steve Attix, diagnosed with bladder cancer, begins chemotherapy this month
ALEXANDRIA, VA-Steve Attix is the founder and owner of the Del Ray School of Music (2405 Mt. Vernon Ave.). If you walk by the location and look in the window, it’s more than likely you will see him teaching a child to play an instrument. It’s what he loves to do. In April, he was diagnosed with bladder cancer. Scheduled to begin chemotherapy this month, he will also have to have his bladder removed.
His wife, Mary Ellen, says on a GoFundMe page for the school that while Steve recovers, the business, a mainstay in the neighborhood since 2000, will lose income and have to pay costs that amount to more than $50,000.
“We are both uncomfortable asking for financial help but know that we need the support of our family, friends and community to get through this,” Mary Ellen wrote on the page. As of the publication of this article, people have donated $26,459.
On Aug. 3, a free concert is taking place in Del Ray to support the school. Rock for Steve will feature a special lineup of local bands from 3 to 9 pm. Organizers say donations are appreciated. Come to Pat Miller Neighborhood Square (2311 Mt. Vernon Ave.) and enjoy a family-friendly show.
