ALEXANDRIA, VA-The Mount Vernon Ladies’ Association (MVLA) has elected Anne “Dede” Neal Petri as its next regent, the 24th in the organization’s history. She will succeed Margaret Hartman Nichols. Each regent comes from one of the 50 states, and Petri hails from Wisconsin.

Under her leadership, MVLA will prepare for the milestone celebrations of the 250th anniversary of America next year and George Washington’s 300th birthday in 2032. MVLA owns and operates George Washington’s Mount Vernon estate.

“The Mount Vernon Ladies’ Association has the critical role of keeping George Washington ‘first in war, first in peace, first in the hearts of his countrymen,’” Petri said. “By expanding educational outreach, fostering a deeper appreciation of our history, and preparing for the upcoming milestones celebrations, we will position Mount Vernon as a beacon of preservation and inspiration for all Americans.”

Petri has been a Vice Regent since 2004.

Besides overseeing the two anniversary events, Petri will also demonstrate her leadership during the restoration efforts of the mansion and the additions to the Education Center.

Born and raised in Indiana, Petri currently serves as President and CEO of the Olmsted Network, where she led the Olmsted Bicentennial celebration. She formerly served as general counsel for the National Endowment for the Humanities. Petri has a  BA from Harvard College in American History and Literature. She also earned her law degree at the school.
