ALEXANDRIA, VA — The Animal Welfare League of Alexandria (AWLA) is excited to announce the next cohort of Alexandria Animal Academy dog training classes, beginning Sunday, September 7. This virtual session is perfect for dog owners looking to keep their pets mentally and physically active and is especially great during fall, outside weather.

Designed to improve behavior, boost confidence, and strengthen the human-canine bond, the 7-week online courses are open to anyone—not just Alexandria residents. Whether you have a rambunctious puppy, a shy rescue, or a leash-reactive dog, there’s a course for you.

Participants can choose from three specialized learning tracks led by certified trainer Beth Tumlin, CPDT-KA (Certified Professional Dog Trainer – Knowledge Assessed):

  • Confidence Building
For shy, fearful, or nervous dogs who react with barking, growling, or hiding when faced with new situations or strangers. Ideal for newly adopted dogs or pups who panic in unfamiliar environments.
  • Chill Out
For high-energy dogs who struggle with impulse control or winding down. If your dog is always on the move or gets overly excited, this track helps teach calm behaviors and better manners.
  • Leash Reactivity
For dogs who pull, bark, or lunge on walks. This course is designed to help dogs (and their people) navigate walks with less stress and more confidence.

Find the full course description for each here.

Each track can be taken individually or combined, with prices starting at just $200. Scholarships and course auditing options are available to ensure accessibility for all.

Virtual learning keeps your dog engaged at home while allowing for personalized attention from a professional trainer. It’s a great alternative when weather, schedules, or accessibility prevent in-person sessions.
